Mr Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressive Congress has been declared winner of the Edo state gubernatorial election

He defeated his opponent Mr Osagie Ize-Iyemu of the Peoples Democratic Party with 66,310 votes.

The results did not really go down well with the PDP supporters and this led to a protest at the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) office at Benin with the allegations that the results were manipulated. The protesters demanded that the results should be cancelled. 
However, the police were able to contain the situation with the use of tear gas as the protest was becoming strong.
